If you’re thinking of killing yourself then head to Spiż, a sharp reminder that life really can get worse. Begin by queuing at the entrance to buy a swipey card, which in turn allows you to join another queue at the bar for beer. But not before queuing to leave your coat at the obligatory coat check. Your patience is rewarded with premature hearing loss and a possible outbreak of acne as you mix it up with students too young to drink in many countries within a huge industrial space full of lasers and crappy pop noise, several bars, two enormous dance-floors and a disgustingly small smoking room. While the beer is by no means bad, no one's here to appreciate the ale; in fact, it'd be dishonest of us not to say that Spiż is one of the most horrible places we've ever been in our lives. The locals love it.

Rubbish. FYI, as far as breweries go there are two of the biggest in PL close to Katowice: Tyskie (located nearby in Tychy) and Żywiec. You can take tours of both and Zywiec makes a nice stop if you're taking a detour into the mountains; the brewery architecture is beautiful. Not the greatest beer but crazy cheap: while killing time at the bus station in Zywiec we had a drink at a bar close by and it was only 2.50zł for a pint!
