The city's Great Synagogue was originally on this site before being destroyed by fire by the Nazis on September 14, 1939. The immediate area is now a scruffy outdoor marketplace with this small monument, dedicated to the memory of the Katowice Jews who perished during WWII and unveiled in July 1998, hidden at its centre.
