Part of the fun of Zabrze simply entails walking around and making the best of it. While it can’t claim to be visually entrancing there’s no shortage of handsome structures to admire, not least the fearsome water tower at ul. Zamojskiego 1a (just east of S-4 on the IYP map). Constructed between 1907 and 1909 to a design by August Kinda, this incredibly unique secessionist structure features eight brick buttresses supporting the water tank and is covered with an octagonal roof with a lantern inside, which makes it resemble a wayward lighthouse. At 46 metres, this marvel remains one of the tallest buildings in Upper Silesia today. While we're on the bizarre, they don't come stranger than the Steel House (Stalowy Dom) on ul. Cmentarna (S-2). A truly experimental structure, this two-storey building designed to house four families was completed in 26 days in 1927 when eight massive steel walls cast at the neighbouring Donnersmarck Steelworks were welded together. Today it claims fame as the only building made entirely out of metal in all of Europe; check it out. Neither should one miss the so-called Admiral Palast on ul. Wolności 305 (S-2). Completed in 1928, the art deco gem comes with a dome crowning the corner, as well as reliefs depicting mankind as found across the five continents.
