Unveiled on May 1, 2004, the day Poland joined the European Union, Jerzy Kędziora's intriguing monument perched precariously on a wire over the Brda weighs in at just over 50kg and is now considered to be the defining symbol of the city. At first glance the statue, which is supposed to represent EU membership, looks a little wobbly, but is actually saying to the world that there's no turning back. Built to the likeness of the designer's son, the balancing boy is accompanied by a single swallow. The swallow, incidentally, is a tribute to Andrzej Szwalbe, the late director of the Pomeranian Philharmonic.
