Capability Brown, Edouard Andre, Percy Thrower. Three men, who in their own icebreaking way, gave gardening glamour, and brought it the worldwide attention from an otherwise suspect public. This roll call of legends can now be joined by the name of Patrick Blanc, a Paris born scientist who has invented the bizarre world of the vertical garden. Known in French as ‘Le Mur Vegetal’, his barmy projects rely on a new-fangled method of growing plants without soil, and can be viewed in a stack of high profile destination that include the EU Parliament building, the French Ambassador’s Residence in New Delhi and... Gdansk’s newly opened Galeria Przymorze. Designed in February 2009, work on this masterpiece kicked off in May, and uses a light construction of some thirty kilograms of plantage per square metre. Consisting of six hundred plants, and approximately sixty separate species (mainly hailing from tropical continents such as Africa, Asia and the Americas), the flora are planted on a mineral mat from whence they grow. In all the project took ten days to be brought to life, and can now be witnessed by the general public at newest shopping destination in the tri-city.
