Established in 2004 and located in the old area of Gdańsk Shipyard, the Wyspa Institute of Art is directed by the Wyspa Progress Foundation. The first non-commercial institute in Poland with an international profile, it deals with areas of modern art culture and is a non-governmental organisation. The Institutes's character and programme concept is closely tied to its location, with history and tradition on one side and the shaping of the future on the other. The founders have carefully formulated its programme, always wary of other stalled European revitalisation projects and the ambition of the Wyspa Institute of Art is to stimulate us all intellectually through exhibitions, talks, screenings, workshops and debates. Wyspa translates as 'island' and the mission is to fit artistically and intellectually into the grounds of the former Shipyard, trying to initiate discussion on its historical role and connect it with historical and contemporary independent artistic movements. This is why the Institute operates in two directions: representing the interests of culture as such and the wider public interest, creating a new, dynamic and creative society in the form of the Young City district. The Island cooperates with numerous international artistic, scientific and educational bodies and at the same time, as part of its development plans, the Institute is about to integrate cultural venues in ex-shipyard grounds and help shape a new area. It's all very exciting and there are plans to rebuild, extend and renovate the current Wyspa building, to allocate more space for artistic activities. The easiest way to get to the Institute is by entering the Shipyard's Historic Gate No 2. If you're planning to visit by car, then choose Gate No.3 at ul. Jana Z Kolna (I-3) but then contact the office by phone so you won't have problems with the guard at the gate. The office staff speak perfect English so dont be shy, it's well worth the effort.
Admission depends on the event.
