A beautifully Eastern European, academic-feel museum, full of pot plants, delicious-smelling wooden fittings and the prerequisite collection of ladies guarding the exhibits, the city's Archaeological Museum is no better or worse than any other and is worth a leisurely stroll round if you've got the time. Amid the usual prehistoric warrior skeletons and old city models, of note here is the lovely Amber Room and a small collection of broken plates and other household items rescued from the city's devastated 1945 landscape.  [...]

Short of building a time machine this is the closet you’ll ever get to seeing what local life was like hundreds of years back. Complete with background noises of peeling bells and animals braying, this museum presents a series of life-size dioramas designed to show what Gdańsk once must have been like. Among the recreations are a cobblers store, a bath house and an inn, and even the smells have been recreated and piped into the rooms. The mannequins aren’t exactly Madame Tussaud’s, but this is still loads of fun, and far removed from the standard museum experience in Poland.

National Museum Old Art Department
A former Franciscan monastery and fever hospital, the National Museum houses an astonishing array of Gothic fabrics, sculpture, gold, silver, paintings, ceramics and elaborately carved furniture in its cross-vaulted cloisters and chambers. The centrepiece of the museum is Hans Memling's triptych The Final Judgment (1467-1471). Returned to the city by the Russians in 1956, the artwork has in turn been stolen by Napoleonic troops, Russians and Nazis. The displays remain for the time being, infuriatingly, in Polish only.
