Gdynia | Arrival & Transport | Public transport

Gdynia has no trams but is served by a comprehensive network of buses and trolley-buses (ZKM). As with Gdańsk, Gdynia has its own set of tickets which are valid for travel in Gdynia and on the routes which run into Sopot. Tickets cost 2zł/1zł (reduced) and are valid for a single journey. A 24-hour ticket which is valid for all Gdynia lines costs 9zł/4,50zł. Children under the age of 4 travel free. You have to buy an additional ticket for luggage and pets and this costs the same as normal ticket. The fine for travelling without a valid ticket is 100zł reduced to 50zł if you pay on the spot. Inspectors, although in plain clothes, are obliged to identify themselves.

The SKM kolejka (commuter train) runs more or less every 10 minutes between 05:00 - 19:00 through the Tri-city and less frequently outside of these hours. Tickets can be bought from modern ticket machines which can be found on most platforms and have instructions in English and a couple of other languages. While these are a positive development for the visitor they unfortunately have an annoying habit of being broken regularly. Alternatively you can buy tickets in main stations where you see the sign for Kasa Biletowa or as a last resort from the conductor at the front of the train. If you buy tickets from the Kasa Biletowa make sure that you stamp them with the time in the bright yellow boxes on or close to the platform to validate them. Ticket prices are dependant on the number of stops you are travelling but a journey from Gdynia to Gdańsk will cost 4.50zł and take about 30 minutes (Sopot will cost 3.10zł and take about 10 minutes from Gdynia). Children‘s buggies travel for free. Bikes do not. You have to buy a 3.10zł ticket for them. Children under 4 travel for free although you might be requested to provide proof of the child‘s age. ISIC and Euro 26 cards are not valid and you will have to pay a fine if caught travelling without a validated ticket.

If you plan to use the transport system throughout the 3 cities then you it is advisable to buy a daily multi-city ticket. There are three types. For using the ZKM (bus, trams and trolley buses) in all 3 cities the price is 12/6zł (concessions). Note that this is valid in Sopot also. For use on the SKM (local commuter train) and ZKM in Gdańsk OR SKM and ZKM in Gdynia (you can use both in Sopot as well) the ticket costs 15/7.50zł and to use both the SKM and ZKM throughout the Tri-city the cost is 18/9zł. If you‘re planning on staying longer then a new 72hr ticket has also been introduced - the first type covers buses, trolleybuses and trams and costs 24zł (12zł reduced). There‘s also a swankier version which covers SKM trains, and this one is priced at 36/18zł.
