On top of being Kraków's only microbrewery (serving rather palatable Light, Ginger, Dunkel and Weizen ales), CK Browar has plenty more going for it including the handsome beer hall interior with copper brewing vats, tiffany-style lamps and long wooden tables fit for a viking feast with a fist of grog. Redoubling the barbarian potential is the possibility of getting a five litre beer tower with its own tap fitted to your table. Damn good times, the downside being that what could be an elegant, even sophisticated, beer cellar has become a rather loutish lads' bar noted for bad music, bad service and bad company - mostly intoxicated, unpredictable and sometimes aggressive local boys. Shame indeed.

  The beer is pretty good and the beer tower concept is brilliant, the only drawbacks being it's hardly any cheaper than ordering five beers one at a time and the place is so packed you may not be able to get a table that allows you to have a go at it. Not so dodgy, but not really a tourist place either.

  While this restaurant/beer hall/club seems like it should be a tourist haven, it is overrun with locals and not necessarily the friendly kind you want to share a drink with. When I was here a couple years ago with a friend, a local bloke deliberately walked into (actually through) us and then him and his friends immediately came charging back at us trying to instigate a fight. We eventually succeeded in making them feel macho and ordering ourselves drinks, but we never felt comfortable amongst the clientele which seemed to consist mostly of hooligans from Nowa Huta. Hope it's changed since then...
