Practically every city in Poland has a PRL-themed bar, but we’ve never seen one so cheerily kitted out before. Where most communist bars use grim People’s Republic icons and busts of Lenin, PRL Klub has wall murals of the cheery proletariat happily toiling away, and the red-checked tablecloths only add to the gleeful vibe – it’s almost more soda fountain than Soviet. Whether your poison is whiskey, vodka, beer or wine it’s all just 5zl, which might account for the happy atmosphere.

Tried this place yesterday. Great for those visiting from outside of Poland to get at least a small flavour of what things were like in Poland under the Communist PRL (Polish Peoples Republic). Mind you that's ignoring the long queues for everything and nothing in the shop when you actually reached the counter and many more not quite so pleasant memories of those times. What you get here is Polish humour in representing those times not least the Socialist Realist paintings (even the obligatory health warning has humour attached to it) the TV screen dressed up to look like an old model with Communist era films playing. On that subject the Mis film is an especially accurate and satirical representation of the times and of Polish humour. There is the wodka bottle being half emptied and topped up with tap water the customers tea getting the same treatment the Milicja (Police) setting up dummy buildings so that they can entrap motorists the bribes shops selling goods under the counter and the Milk Bar with chains attached to the utensils etc etc. Worth it for the film alone. Nice choice of music playing too. So highly recommended (right next to the Biedronka store and just off of Piotrkowska)
