Although his first instrument was drums, when he heard The Beatles at the age of nine he decided to go for guitar, going on to play in a number of country bands. Due to his growing interest in jazz he joined the Berkley College of Music and also took a short break from studying to play with Barry Miles' fuson group. Then in 1974 he was discovered by Chick Corea, and the rest as they say is history.
