The iconic film director David Lynch, whose surrealist works range from Mulholland Drive to Twin Peaks, has completed work on his latest project, Inland Empire - currently in post-production. The title does not give much away, referring to the four neighbourhoods of Los Angeles close to the Californian desert, and even the cast seem in the dark as to the plot, with many claiming they were never handed scripts. “It’s the story of a woman in deep trouble. The story also has a hidden mystery, that’s all I will say on the subject,” the director declared. Many Polish actors are in the cast, notably Karolina Gruszka, Krzysztof Majchrzak, Leon Niemczyk, and Piotr Andrzejewski. But the main roles are taken by Laura Dern, Justin Theroux, Jeremy Irons and Harry Dean Santon. A chunk of the film was filmed in Łódź, with locations including the Rubinstein Suite in the Grand Hotel, Manufaktura, ul. Wschodnia and the spinning mill on ul. Ogrodowa. The films Polish premier will take place at this years Camerimage Festival. So why Łódź? Lynch first visited the city in 2000 when he was invited to the Camerimage Festival, and his fascination with the towns dark and gloomy side brought him back two years later. That’s when the idea for Inland Empire was born, ‘in a little bedroom painted green, where the first images were taken’. Since then Lynch has become frequent visitor to the city, and in 2003 the director took a series of photographs of the city and its people which formed part of an exhibition later displayed in France. Earlier this year he signed an agreement with the director of Camerimage, Marek Żydowicz, and the co-owner of Grupa Atlas, Andrzej Wałczak, to call into being the Arts of the World Foundation. The foundation is to open an Arts of the World centre in Łódź, with the purpose being to build a space for creating art, as opposed to just showcasing it. Lynch also plans to have his own sound studio there. Fans of the man will find themselves in Lynch heaven by booking the Lynch Suite in the Centrum Hotel – the directors sumptuous HQ for his local visits.
