Currently in the process of a full renovation (due for completion in January), the Boss is one of the best budget options around, with clean, basic rooms ideal for anyone on an embarrassing salary. Set in a green and white block the majority of guests are strictly Polish, with extras here including a communal lounge, guarded parking and a tiny-sized conference room. Slightly out of the way, trams in and out of the centre run along the next street.

No beauty prizes for the building, but everything else about M hits the target nicely. This is solid international three star standard, with trappings including comfortable rooms that include LCD screens and workspace. In the Bałuty district, so learn some cab numbers in advance. [...]

Lashings of brass and Formica in the lobby set the tone for yet another of Łódź’s delightful throwback hotels. Featuring a wonky lift, lime green corridors and creaky floorboards the Polonia comes armed to the teeth with an eclectic choice of inimitable rooms. Choose from unrenovated masterpieces with tiny balconies, strange little two-room triples, fully renovated doubles with huge windows and any combination therein. Extras don’t play a major part in this hotel’s repertoire, the most exciting find being some rather large transistor radios, but if it’s character you’re looking for you couldn’t do much better than this place. Prices stand to change in April.
