Attendance figures never seem to get into double figures here, which is a real shame considering the quality on offer. Those who do make it out to this forgotten Rynek spot will get a choice of three themed rooms to explore – Russian (dark woods, white walls and orthodox paintings), Polish-German (chandeliers and a library corner) and Jewish (brick walls, patterned seating). The menu features food from the aforementioned, and ranges from goose necks to shashlyks. A smashing restaurant, and one we hope continues to trade.

Anatewka
Celebrate Łódź’s Jewish heritage inside an atmospheric venue scattered with prayer shawls, menorahs and general bric-a-brac, and don’t forego a visit in the evening, when the live music recitals involve violinists sitting on a chair suspended half way up a wall. A team of flighty waitresses take the orders, and the chef does the rest coming up trumps with a range of traditional Jewish dishes, including rather good goose.

Skull-capped men present great eats inside the only Kosher-certified venue in the city. Packed with chiming grandfather clocks, sepia photographs and antique trimmings it’s easy to lose track of time inside this labour of love, especially if you find yourself in conversation with the owners. The menu isn’t huge but features tasty bites like falafel, sole and pancakes, as well as a knockout tomato soup which is both thick and spicy. Only the occasional passing truck reminds of the 21st century that awaits outside.
