Post War Jewish Łódź

Many Jews who survived the Holocaust descended on Łódź at the end of the war, and a new, even thriving community sprang up. Though there were two major waves of state-sponsored emigration to Israel (in 1948 and 1957-8) there remains a thriving Jewish community of around 5,000 people in the city, based around the synagogue on ul.Pomorska. Of all Poland’s cities, few have been as understanding and remorseful as Łódź when dealing with the legacies of the Holocaust. Not for nothing is it often considered as one of the most multi-cultural in Poland.
