For many years there was nothing to see in Żagań. Now thanks to the work of diehard historians and RAF personnel, hut 104, the barracks from where the escape was hatched, has been recreated. It forms part of the Museum of the Prisoners of War.
Getting there
Getting there by bus or train from Poznań is horrible either way and the camp is best reached from Wrocław. There is one bus that goes directly to Żagań (not on holidays, though) from Poznań but arrives at 19:24, so it is particularly unhelpful if you'd planned a one-day visit. That bus leaves from Poznań’s main bus station at 15:30. There's also a bus (which also doesn’t run on holidays) to Zielona Góra that leaves Poznań at 7:25 and 11:00 and arrives at 10:00 and 13:55, with buses from Zielona Gora to Żagań leaving at 11:00 and 14:15 (this later bus runs only during school days) and arriving at 12:11 and 15:40. The museum opening hours are such that a stay in Żagań will be required. Check out www.willapark.pl if you are looking for somewhere close to spend the night.
If you’re going by train you need to take a minimum of 3 different trains to get there from Poznań, and it would also necessitate an overnight stay. Getting out of the prison appears to have been easier than getting tourists to this historical spot.
