Welcome to Sin City. Official estimates claim Warsaw is home to over 1,500 brothels, a number that can only be beaten by all but a handful of European cities. President Lech Kaczyński is currently waging a one man war against them, doing his level best to rid Warsaw of its red-light reputation. While trying to stamp out the world’s oldest profession may seem a silly idea, dozens of brothels have already been closed in a series of spot checks. Although there is no specific red light district, you’ll find a number of bordellos concentrated in the city centre, namely around the Jerozolimskie, Wilcza, Nowogrodzka area. Most of these tend to be uncomplicated affairs with five or six girls working a shift, and with prices ranging from 100-150zł for one hour. They’re easy enough to find, just look out for the hundreds of flyers that clog up the drains or get pinned to car windscreens. Do not expect English to be spoken. Neither should you expect to be welcomed by the winsome Hustler creatures pictured on the flyers. One place that consistently elicits positive reviews from the ex-pat fraternity is A-Studio (www.a-studio.pl). Yet for every A-Studio, you’ll find a dozen places decorated with bare mattresses and sick-looking girls from Belarus. STD’s are a fact of life, and do not for one minute think you are beyond reproach; tread carfefully. Neither should one assume the girls are on the game because they enjoy sleeping with fat men twice their age. Poland has an appalling record when it comes to human trafficking, and several Warsaw brothels are stuffed with women bullied into the trade. If you’re looking for a more classy experience then you have two choices. Firstly hit one of the strip clubs (Sofia, Loch or Kokomo). All operations claim that their dancers are strictly off-limits to Joe Public. This is a lie, and nearly every girl will have her price - usually starting from 500zł plus. Alternatively hit one of the villas in the suburbs. Most taxi drivers will be on a commission to take clients to a particular place, so don’t neccessarily trust your chirpy driver to take you to the best one. Rasputin, Villa Rosa and Studio Relax are all popular choices with prices beginning at 200zł for an hour.
