Arti is bit of a forgotten man when it comes to Warsaw’s Indian restaurants, which is a bit of a surprise considering the consistent quality that exits the serving hatch. This is Warsaw’s best chicken madras, with a heart jumping hit that lets you know the chef means business, and while the interiors aren’t up to much, the cooking most certainly is. We’ve long been promised Arti Mk II, and that looks like finally being realized sometime in March – find that one on the other side of the water, ul. Francuska 5a. Review next issue.

A good map or an honest taxi driver are what you'll need to make it out here. That obstacle conquered and you'll be faced with a more bijou and informal version of the Tandoor Palace. That means great food and fast service. [...]

You may simply know Bollywood as a place to get trousered in while tapping around to Indian dance hits. But behold, it’s much more than that. Hit them during ordinary hours and you’ll find a kitchen that consistently throws up some of the best food in the city. The menu is small and con [...]

Things get seriously steamy in Bombaj, a six table venue frequently fogged with clouds of eye stinging spices. It’s small, cheap and cheerful, with an outstanding chicken tikka masala as well as excellent curried prawns arriving courtesy of pretty Poles in ceremonial dress. Misses include the [...]

Buddha Indian Restaurant
Bored of the sushi explosion? Then pay heed, the people of Warsaw are discovering that Indian food doesn’t necessarily result in scorched tonsils and a sore bottom. Here’s one of the latest Indian restaurants to crack Warsaw, and the results are very good indeed. Recommended is the Buddha Spice, a tomato heavy creation with just enough spice to keep your interest, and perfectly complimented by a stack of soft, floppy naans. Interiors are an almost over-indulgent nod to traditional India, while prices a step below you Nowy Świat standard.

India Curry
British business types love to conduct their expense account dinners here, an elegant Indian restaurant that features a burbling fountain and food that goes way beyond the butter chicken and madras menu of others. We rate the murgh mekhani as the top dish here, and it’s perfectly paired with a glass of ginger lemon juice.

You might brace yourself for the worst when visiting LaBono. Set in the heart of pikey Praga you’ll find Warsaw’s latest Indian inside a shabby brick building, black snow piled in mountains round the entrance. It doesn’t look too promising, so surprise, surprise then that this tra [...]

Maharaja
Inch your way to the top floor by way of a scabby stairwell to find a stained pink interior that smacks of a student ghetto curry house back in England. But there is good news; the food has improved, and dramatically so, and while this place isn’t a patch on Arti or Namaste it’s not the no-go zone of yesteryear.

Entrance to Mandala is via a scummy courtyard, one usually frequented by tramps scavenging for cig butts. It’s through this assault course you’ll happen across one of the best budget secrets in Warsaw, a place heavily populated by students and swampland characters sporting scary dreadlocks. Decorated with whitewashed walls and vague industrial touches this place morphs into a decent club at weekends, but most people will prefer to know it for its stonking Indian/Nepalese cooking.

Namaste India
What was a tiny grocery store with fogged up windows has expanded – granted, the windows are still fogged, and the grocery store remains tiny, but you’ll now find seating shifted into a side room, meaning there’s no more chance of some irritating browser dropping a tin of mango chutney on your head. For office workers around town this, the original Namaste, remains the best, and we can’t help but admit this is some of the best ethnic food around – better still, the prices are set so low you can’t help but ask what’s the catch. There isn’t one; we’ve tried pretty much everything on the menu, and have yet to find a weak link. If you’re picking up a takeaway ring ahead, waiting times are torture.

Namaste India Clay Oven
When Namaste first opened in 2006 it proved such a success story a new venue was needed to cope with the overflow custom. Guess what, that proved such a success story yet another venue was needed. So presto, the original Clay Oven has closed, and moved approximately seventy five metres down Piwna to expanded premises at number twelve. And if you thought the previous effort was pretty good, then bow down and worship at what is up there with the great Indian restaurants of Central Eastern Europe. There’s no such thing as a bad meal here, but to really hit the high notes order the butter chicken – incomparable to any other curry in town. Also at: ul. Nowogrodzka 15 (C-4) and ul. Nowogrodzka 27 (B-4).

Indian cooking hits new depths of despair in Royal India, a half-hearted effort with a vapid atmosphere and dishes that clearly fall below par: don’t be surprised to find yourself discreetly coughing bits of chicken into your napkin. Indeed, you’ll find a better bird across the road in [...]

Tandoor Palace
It’s hard to miss the Tandoor Palace – this place is lit up like a Christmas tree, and quite possibly visible from space. ‘The Best Indian Food in Poland’ proclaims the signage, and while that was once the case, it’s not a mantra many customers repeat. But that’s just a sign of how Warsaw moved on. Yes, you will find cheaper, indeed better curries elsewhere, but the TP is still a great call if you want a sit down curry in a proper restaurant-style ambiance; twangy music and sari-clad service adds to the eastern immersion, and it’s not rare to find turbaned proprietor, Charnajit Walia, walking between tables and trading jokes with the regulars. The madras is an absolute scorcher, and the chicken tikka masala has a fan club of its own.     [...]
