Blikle Café

A part of Warsaw folklore. This is where Charles De Gaulle used to come for his donuts back in his Warsaw days, and Blikle still sell a chocolate and marzipan cake honouring their famous guest. A classy, august venue, with a menu available until midnight that includes a range of breakfasts, lunches, ice creams and a dessert selection that will have you in heaven.

In the past year or so Blikle's prices have risen to the point where they don't represent good value for money. It's possible to spend 100 zloty on a meal there and that's without wine. Despite this go to Blikle for the old world atmosphere and some of Warsaw's most wonderful pastries. There's a very cultured old world Polish clientele that frequents the cafe including a few of Poland's best writers. The waiters there are very professional and obliging. For instance when they were offering "Letitzia" white wine on the menu in January they obtained an etiquette for me. They are now trying special events such as Valentine's Day dinners where they offered oysters and champagne and truffles. I still recommend Blikle for all the history atmosphere and service just pay by credit card so when you see how much the meal cost a few weeks later on your card statement you won't scream in horror.

Well this place is really amazing if you wish to indulge in a tea or coffee with a superb cake or dessert to compliment it. It has a Ritz like feel to the place with smart waiters and waitresses, fine interior and everything served in or on elegant china.

There is definitely a ton of history here, with the cafe and patisserie next door successfully evoking an "Old Poland" feel. Blikle is legendary for its donuts. I remember hundreds of people standing in line in front of Blikle in the hard times of February, 1984, waiting for donuts in advance of the Mardi Gras holiday. Just about the best poppyseed cakes you'll ever eat are in Blikle. A great place to go and spend a winter's afternoon either talking with a friend or reading a novel over some good food and drink.
