Recovering from near financial meltdown back in 2002, Warsaw’s second side have enjoyed a soap opera existence in the last few years. Back in 2000 Polonia grabbed the league title, and could boast stars like Emmanuel Olisadebe in their lineup. Distant days, and at press time they find themselves floundering second from bottom in the league table. Ex Legia manager and former Aberdeen oaf, Dariusz Kubicki, has been appointed gaffer, though Polonia have yet to show any signs that they have the ability to be anything but relegation battlers. Off the pitch things are equally volatile. The stadium, falling to pieces a few years ago, has seen a spate of improvements - not least the safe removal of several WWII bombs, discovered during the installation of floodlights last season. Undersoil heating is set to be added in the next year, and plans are being drawn up for a new grandstand. But who will fill those seats is something of a hot potato. A hike in ticket prices has led to games being boycotted, with empty seats occupied by cardboard mannequins as a sign of protest. The board appear to have backed down in the face of the fans, and prices have since been lowered, but relations remain strained. A season of struggle beckons.
