Gubalowka

Gubalowka
For many, the tiny settlement of Gubałówka on top of the hill immediately northwest of Zakopane is little more than an infinite assortment of hamburger stands punctuated with the occasional suspicious-looking shepherd wishing only to trouser your salary in return for a photograph of you and his mountain dog. Gubałówka is, let’s be honest, both of these things, but on closer inspection it also offers just about everything Zakopane offers, only in one handy, bite-size portion. Reached by a Herculean scramble up the aforementioned hill, or by investing 14zł for a two-way trip on the town’s magnificent funicular, an hour or two spent in Gubałówka is an hour or two well spent. To get there, find the large market at the far northern end of ul. Krupówki in the town centre and walk through it until you reach the funicular. The choice is then yours on how to reach the top of the hill. Once you’re up, and depending on the time of year, the adventures are endless, from pony rides for children to a splendid mini bobsleigh ride for all, to a host of small ski and snowboard runs to, well, to the opportunity to have your photograph taken with an ersatz shepherd’s dog. The restaurant of the same name offers a fine place to unwind with a large piece of farmyard animal on your plate with the mighty Tatras as a romantic backdrop, and, if you can’t be bothered to go back down again, book into the Gospoda Pod Niebem hotel and spend the night in a log cabin.
