Step in here and you’ll find exactly why people were once so wary of the inquisition. This two room affair features original pieces of misery in the first room, and then reproductions out back – all of which are bloody creepy. Check for example the Nuremberg Virgin, a weird Dalek-style contraption with spikes in the hollowed out inside – just guess where the naughty people used to figure in this set-up. Also on show are pillories, manacles and ‘the Spanish Tickles’ – a great big spiked rolling pin used for tummy rubs.
