Also known as Willa Koliba and dating from 1894, Stanisław Witkiewicz’s landmark wooden villa was the first building in Zakopane to be built using the newly devised Zakopane Style. As well as the outside of the building itself, which is covered in little carved details, the interior has been restored to its former glory and is packed with authentic furniture and other pieces indicative of local folk art and craft. In the best traditions of Polish museums visitors are obliged to wear plastic bags over their shoes, before skidding around displays protected by the stern eye of the curators. Once operating as HQ for the local Hitler Jugend branch, and then as an orphanage, this place was restored to serve its current purpose in 1987. The results make for an interesting half hour, though the real point of interest are the demented portraits by Witkiewicz’s son upstairs. Known to all as Witkacy this guy painted numerous portraits of his muse while under the influence of powerful hallucinogens, and the results are fabulous.
