The sight of a visitor bringing in duty free drinks and cigarettes through the airport is greeted by smirks and knowing winks by ex-pats. Everything you want in the way of alcohol and tobacco can be bought legally and cheaper in the streets of Bucharest and Brasov than in most Duty Free shops.
Though in theory Romania's membership of the Eu means that you can export as much booze and cigarrettes as you please, you should note that many EU countries have imposed local limits of Romanian imports.
The UK for example, still only allows its residents to import one carton of 200 cigarettes from Romania.
