Local Laws & Police

If you are driving, or are out late at night, it is a good idea to carry at least a photocopy of your passport and driving license. Random ID checks are very rare, but it is the law to have some form of ID on you at all times.

Drinking in public (except in designated areas) leaves you open to a fine, while jaywalking is also illegal, although everyone appears to do it.

Prostitution is slated for legalisation soon, but for now the practice remains illegal. The age of consent is 18 for both heterosexuals and homosexuals.

As for the police, you will probably only come in to contact with a traffic officer. If you are arrested ask to speak to your embassy for advice.

In Bucharest, the main police station is at Str. Lascar Catargiu 22 (halfway between Piata Romana and Piata Victoriei), tel. +40 21 212 56 84).
