Perhaps the best zoo in Romania. Featuring lions, tigers, jaguars, lynx, monkeys and a wide variety of exotic birds, Brasov zoo is especially good for those who want to learn about the wildlife specific to the Carpathian mountains (this area, basically). Almost all of the species found wild in these parts can be seen here, including the Carpathian stag and the brown bear.
Admission 5.00 lei, children 3.00 lei.

You think this is bad? Check out Craiova Zoo! Lions, tigers, brown bears, jaguars and more all sitting in tiny cages, some no bigger than a linen closet; rancid meat and faeces stink out the entire exhibit. It is truely abominable treatment of animals and I cannot for a second think why with the accession into the EU, the Romanian government is still not doing anything to rectify the problem, to address these animal welfare issues? That no one steps in and says anything or forces changes to the regulations surrounding these so called "zoo's" is an insult to the intelligence of all who want progression in Romania. Progression includes animal protection laws!
sorry to differ with the author but the Brazov zoo is heinous, from its smell to its living conditions. mounds of rotten chicken wings were too putrid for even the carrion eaters to bother with. the large animals, as described, are confined to tiny concrete spaces, with shit everywhere. you could quite literally put an arm or a small child in harms way, with the flimsy cages. I think the animals are too depressed to bother to try to attack their bothersome spectators. it is a terrible terrible place. the wild animals include siberian huskies - - dogs!!
