You will like it the minute you walk in the door. Perhaps even before that. Old Town has needed something a bit different for a while, and this place is it. A modernist, minimalist bar/cafe where every chair and table is different, and which has something of a ‘What communist Britain might have looked like’-chic about it. The price of beer is good, and they serve a variety of wines by the glass. Brilliantly simple it is anti-fitze Bucharest at its best and as a result you can expect to see us here often.

Macarena in Atelier Mecanic? This man must have been somewhere else he's mistaking for Atelier Mecanic. Understandable after a few drinks.
Anti-"fitze" may be a good thing at times, but in this case it may be taking it slightly too far - I was on a shots-binge-cum-pub-crawl in the Old Town with a group of friends, having a few shots and drinks in every place we came across, when we landed in Atelierul Mecanic and we were forced to take off almost as soon as we entered. They were playing the Macarena, or something to that extent, which may be fun when stoned, but not when ugly women are dancing "lasciviously" to it, that's not a pretty sight, I kid thee not. But I was willing to forgive the mutant-fest (quite a strange sight in Bucharest...would the British mind terribly if I said it reminded me of London? oh wait, I did say that, so I suppose Schrodinger's cat's out of the proverbial bag or box or somesuch), had the shots been decent. Alas, that was not the case. I asked one of the bartenders for some shots and I was forwarded to another bartender, who supposedly had some idea as to what I'm talking about. You guessed it, he did not. And admitting he didn't would have even saved some face maybe, but he kept nodding thoughtfully while I was asking him to give us some nice shots, and proceeded to fill 4 shot glasses almost to the brink with cheapo vodka - I imagined that's the strong bit in the shot, to be followed by some nice flavouring, and asked him to pour less vodka for my girlfriend, as she wanted a lighter shot. He did pour less vodka, half a shot glass to be precise, but that was it, he added a lemon wedge to each shot and kept nodding, apparently pleased with himself, while pushing them towards us, when I almost body-slammed him and asked him to at least top them off with some Midori melon liqueur I noticed lying about. He was very surprised by the suggestion its unsubtle implications towards his bartending skills, but grudgingly complied. So please, kind readers, listen to a native's advice, as I've listened to countless IYP guides across my many European wanderings, and stay out of Atelierul Mecanic. If you're in the area and looking for better drinks and better-looking women try Interbelic, though I wouldn't recommend that either if you're looking for better music or a place where you can leave your coat safely.
