One of the grandest-looking cultural centres you're ever likely to come across, the French Institute won't leave you feeling unsatisfied with what's on offer. For starters, to understand what's written in the books stocked in the excellent library on the top floor, you can take French language courses (all levels) and then round them off with an exam. If you have kids, leave them at the children's library on the ground floor. Romanian-language courses also available if you want an extra challenge. The centre behind the institute shows a wide range of French films, concerts and events and, although small, is excellent.
