Also known as the thinking man's La M*ma. If you want very good Romanian food cooked slowly and with great care then this is where to come. There is no menu as such: simply choose one of the delicious specials chalked up on a blackboard that the pretty waitresses will bring to your table. There is usually a good ciorba or soup, and more often than not a lamb dish: if they have the lamb stew when you visit, make sure you order it, it's great. Reservations usually needed Friday and Saturday nights.

There are not many items on the menu (there is no menu actually, other than a list on a blackboard waiters take to tables), but the decor makes it for those missing. The place has a charm of its own, trying to bring back memories of the 1930s Romanians never cease to praise. The varza a la Cluj, some of the cold starters (especially the zacusca and the baked pepper salad) and the musaca are recommended. Bring along Rosie Waldeck's book and you will be fine.
