Violeta's Vintage Kitchen

The concept is great: very good Romanian food with a nod towards the vegetarian served off a menu that changes daily. You can check it online and then decide if you fancy anything before setting off. Alas, the service can be a little hit and miss. On one visit we were given our menus, then ignored. We gave them five minutes, then ten, then 15... then we got up and left. Next time though all was well. We hope the second experience was the regular experience, for the place is lovely and just so un-Bucharest you want to squeeze it and hug it.

Just found this website. I've been to Violeta's a few times. It was okay food not bad and yes very pricey. I see the owner wrote this "Concerning my food being cooked in the morning refrigerated and reheated on order this is all bullshit. There’s not a refrigerator ..." Uh oh. You mean that display case in front that's full of different dishes isn't refrigerated? Some of that food has been sitting there since we walked in and still there a couple of hours later when we walked out. Some of it was taken from the case and served to us. How dreadful is it that it is not refrigerated! And if prepared food is put into a bain marie it is in fact to reheat it. I don't understand this. I never heard of Casa Satya before just looked it up and read the menu and it's got a lot of ecologic dishes. And a nice terrace. Will have to try that. I wish there was some kind of health dept to tell about the non-refrigerated foods at Violeta's.What a shame.

No problem at all, Miere, there’s still enough space under the sun for all of us. You’re probably right; Casa Satya might be the right place to be for a vegetarian. I’ve never been there, but I saw their astonishing 170 pages menu or so and I instantly knew it can’t be nothing less than serious business there. Sorry to disappoint you again, I don’t necessary associate the vegetarian way of life with the healthiest one or with ecology whatsoever. Things are more complex and simpler than that, on the same time.Sarah, that’s my husband you’re talking about. He’s a pretty joyful person, you probably caught him on the day he’s receiving the rent bill. It can be devastating, I’m telling you. He’s not there to watch you; he’s there because he cares. He’s there for the same reason for which I’m upstairs in the kitchen, cooking fresh food daily from 11 AM till 8 PM. Concerning my food being cooked in the morning, refrigerated and reheated on order, this is all bullshit. There’s not a refrigerator, what you’re seeing there, it is bain-marie equipment. Sorry you don’t like what I’m cooking; it’s a matter of taste, I learned to deal with it, and you should do it also. Life is too short to waist it on things you don’t love, when you have a choice. Nevertheless, we are still working on the design. Sincerely yours, Violeta.

I've been here a few times and always really want to like it, but it isn't easy. This place isn't bad, it just isn't worth the ridiculously high prices, esp given their "distracted" service. I get the impression that they're trying to attract an American clientele: their signage is in English and their location is near the (current) US Embassy. Menu is mostly traditional, although I agree that some of it tends to spend too much time in the 'fridge. Food is okay, occasionally very good (like those olive rolls we had one night), and they seem to have live music fairly regularly, so that's usually when we go. There are very few vegetarian dishes on the menu, however, which is rather odd for an "ecological" type of restaurant. If you want natural food - - esp if you want vegetarian food - - Casa Satya has a better menu, better preparation and service, better atmosphere, and significantly better prices. Sorry, Violeta.

"Bad taste" would describe this place best. Bad taste both as the design and the food go. Walls are awfully painted, furniture looks cheap and is uncomfortable. The waitress always seems to be involved in a conversation on her mobile phone and you can see a strange guy sitting at a table, in a pretty bad mood, looking rather hatefully at the customers. He must be with the management. He doesn't seem to get the fact that he is not watching prison inmates. The food - where to start? - the food is cooked in the morning, refrigerated and reheated on order. As "True Blood" fans would say: "Oh, my Godric!". There are bottles of wine, juice and cornflakes boxes stacked all over the place and the place is completely empty of customers most of the time. So if you're looking for a place to meditate, you can go to this restaurant. If the strange guy is in a good mood, that is. And if you can focus on meditating while being watched and while a rude waitress talks on the phone. But, please, do not go there for the food. It's even worse than the design.

I have been eating at Violeta's for the past year. The food is fresh and the variety is unsurpassed in Bucharest-that is there is always something new on the menu daily-for even the most finicky of appetites. Three weeks ago for dessert, I had a piece of cherry pie, that was one of the best I have ever tasted. Their soups and ciorbas are splendid; as are their fresh salads. As for the previous reviewer, if you are unsatisfied with a dish it would be prudent to inform the cook, or staff of the discrepancy-as we would in SUA. The ambience is cozy, and the only issue that I have is that at times, when busy, the wait staff seem inundated.

I imagine you were lucky to leave before you got the food, unfortunately I stayed and I got my food. I could not eat it, it was a strange mixture of some lonely food left in a corner and heated five times during the day. My food left in the refrigerator since Sunday tastes a little bit better and I still don't eat it, I throw it away.I read a lot of good things about the concept, the idea of bio, natural, healthy food but there cannot be a concept for bad food. Yes, it's like my grandma's food and my grandma is not cooking anymore since 2000. Sorry, I paid 20 Euro and the only good thing I got was the glass of wine.
