Domniţa Balaşa Church [Biserica Domniţa Balaşa]

Domniţa Balaşa Church
To say this church has been the victim of bad luck is an understatement. Built in 1885, the church is named after Constantin Brâncoveanu's sixth daughter, who built an earlier church on the site in 1744, but which burnt down soon after. In 1751 a second church was built; but that was also later damaged, during an earthquake in 1838. Building work almost immediately started on a third church, but that too proved unstable and just 40 years later it was replaced by the current, orange-coloured, Neo-Romanesque building. Serious cracks that appeared after another earthquake in 1940 were repaired in the 1960s, only to be damaged again in the massive earthquake of 1977. Be cautious when viewing.
