Sheremetevo airport

Sheremetevo airport
Sheremetevo is now the ugly step sister of Moscow's airports and has a bad reputation for its long queues and lack of facilities. There are two terminals. The smaller terminal, Sheremetevo 1, is for domestic flights, while the main terminal, Sheremetevo 2, is for international flights. Make sure you know which terminal you need as the terminals are not close to each other and the sign posts often feature letters as well as numbers which can be confusing.

By far the best way to get into town is via the aeroexpress train which runs between Sheremetyevo 2 and Belorussky Train Station, right next to the Belorusskaya metro station (green line 2 and circle line). On the way to the airport only, it also stops at Savyolovsky Train Station, right next to the Savyolovsky metro station on the gray line 9 in the north. Tickets (320Rbl, children 100Rbl) can be purchased at the airport's train terminal, just follow the signs for it. Trains run almost every half an hour, although be sure to check the timetable in the train station or at the aeroexpress website. The first train leaves Sheremetyevo 2 at 05:00 and the last at 23:30.

If you arrive or depart from Sheremetyevo 1 or C as it is also known, there is a free shuttle that will bring you there, to and from Sheremetyevo 2.

The airport is also serviced by marshrutka mini buses (route No.949) to metro station Rechnoy Vokzal (last stop of green line 2) and route №948 to metro station Planernaya (last stop of pink line 7) from where it's another 40 minutes travel time by metro to the city centre.

Bus No.851 also leaves from the front of the terminal costing a modest 25Rbl. It takes around half an hour between the two Sheremyetevo terminals and around 90mins to Rechnoy Vokzal. Once you reach the city centre, note that Rechnoy Vokzal metro is the last stop on line 2, the green line so after six stops you can then change to circle line that goes around Moscow in a circular fashion.

A taxi from Sheremetevo to the centre can take up to two hours depending on the traffic, a reasonable being around 1,800 Rubles. Try not to pay more than 2,200Rbl but taxi drivers will offer upwards of this limit.

If flying into Sheremetyevo and making a transfer between terminals to another Russian city, follow the signs for transit under 4 hours (that is if your flight leaves less than four hours after landing) and you will be directed to a separate passport control and customs. If you don't follow this route, you are likely to miss your connecting flight as queues at passport control and traffic outside will give you a tough race against the clock. If you follow this queue, you're taken through the airfield to terminal 1, not outside on the roads.
