Originally formed in 1983 in Vladivostick, Mumiy Troll (aka Moomin) had always been on the edge of the mainstream. In Soviet times they only ever played illegally and it was only in 1997 that they released their first official album. Once described as ‘a nuclear meltdown of Tom Petty and The Bravery’, the lead singer Lagutenko’s off-beat lyrics are usually accompanied by melodic hard rock, although they’ve played with orchestras too. Nowadays, they are bonefide Russian rock legends, performing in stadiums and headlining festivals across the land, whilst the lead singer is also currently the Russian face of the Nokia advertising campaign.
