This exhibition will be the biggest yet display of the works of 19th Century Russian painter Karl Bryullov. One of the first Russian painters to combine neoclassicism with the new romantic trends of the 19th Century he was held in high regard by his peers and both Pushkin and Gogol compared his greatest masterpieces to the best works of Rubens and Van Dyck. Himself a fan of portraiture he received the greatest fame for his historical paintings, although as the title of this exhibition points out, his skills have been somewhat forgotten by the history books.
