Pyotr Konchalovsky was famously a very prolific painter, producing close to 5,000 paintings before his death in 1956 at the ripe old age of 80 and here the Russian museum has collected together just a few favourites. As a founder of the Russian avant-garde group the Jack of Diamonds, Konchalovsky was heavily inspired by the works of Cezanne and focused particularly on colourful landscapes and still lifes. Like many who remained in Russia after Stalin came to power his later works moved away from post-impressionism and wild cubism and represented instead the first examples of Socialist realist portraiture of which there will also be a small selection here.
