If you are walking past and think this place looks a bit bizarre and empty, that’s because what you see up front is not the restaurant proper – the real action is hidden way in the back. Full length windows give an eye-opening view on to a residential courtyard, while big screen football helps distract from some of the less appetizing things that may be found in such yards. On the food side it’s Russian and European. Avoid the boring Rubinstain salad (isn’t it usually called Caesar?) and go for the lamb chops, blini or stroganoff instead, they are all quite satisfying and won’t break the bank.

I stopped there for the business lunch. The menu was limited, but the food was excellent quality for the money. Especially refreshing and Russian was the cold borscht. My fish was perfectly adequate, nothing special, and the dessert was a thick chocolate cake that I could finish. But all at a very good price. And it's true about how deep the restaurant is. The heart of the restaurant is set considerably away from the street, and it looks active and lively even at lunch time.
