One of the unquestionable pluses of St. Petersburg’s Soviet past is the sprinkling of restaurants serving cuisine from former USSR republics. Of these the most popular both with locals and visitors is probably Georgian, but there are also Armenian, Uzbek, Azeri, and Kazakh places, as well as generalised “Caucasian” cuisine which appears all over the place. These cuisines provide a dash of spice and colour compared with often stodgy Russian dishes, and all are definitely worth experimenting with. Although often characterised as quite meat-heavy – a staple of Caucasian cuisine in Petersburg is the fabulous shashliky (kebabs) which appear on every menu – food from this part of the world is also a good option for vegetarian visitors to the city, making use of the vegetables and pulses native to that part of the world. Dishes you will typically find include Georgian khachapuri (cheese-stuffed bread), Uzbek plov (rice with lamb), and Armenian dolma (stuffed grape-leaves).We selected the best restaurants of all kinds for you.

1001 nights
Aladdin would feel right at home in this middle-eastern style cave restaurant. The low walls are painted in various different colourful, flowery arabic-style patterns and the sound of small fountains trickling away fills the room. The cuisine is Caucasian and central Asian although with most of the friendly staff being Armenian the best dishes are the Caucasian ones. We particularly liked the khinkali (giant meat dumplings) and the stuffed cheese bread with egg. [...]

Argavi restaurant's light, minimal interior lets you wind down after a long day, with large windows offering enchanting views onto the Fontanky River and embankment. We recommend getting a selection of starters to share as the portions are generous. The lobio, a light bean salad, is fantastic, and the satsivi divine - chicken breast poached in a creamy walnut sauce. For something a bit heavier, the warm, doughy khachapuri oozes cheese and the pork shashlyk tickles the tastebuds.

Basic Caucasian fare and by no means the best you will ever eat. However, it’s not the worst either and it’s open till 6am, meaning than when you’re reeling from a hard night out at one of the many popular bars round the corner you can come here and load up on some meat. They love [...]

Grot - or ‘the cave’ is a hidden little cellar bar that is as basic as they come and perfect for those who want to hide away from the over styled tourist haunts of the centre. When the staff are this friendly (no they don’t speak English, but yes they do smile) and the prices this low, interiors really don’t matter. The central Asian/Russian food is on the greasy side and bizarrely almost everything comes served with a fruit garnish, but the lagman (noodle and beef) soup and manty (large meat dumplings) are really rather good. The music is annoying, the beer gives us a headache, yet everyone (including us) seems to love the atmosphere.

Karavan
Modeling itself on the stories of the Arabian nights this opulent central Asian restaurant is crammed full of oil lamps, water pipes, camels and sweetly spiced eastern tea served in glasses. Karavan also has its own stone-oven and a very large bed of hot coals which gives their stuffed flat breads and shashlik a very authentic taste, as well as lending this cavernous space some much needed cosiness. The delights of this Georgian style eatery are numerous. Fresh food, inexpensive and without pretension accompanied by genuinely friendly service makes this place a great dining option. Enjoy the traditional cheese bread khachipuri (where this type of restaurant takes its name), feast on the delicious marinated chicken shaslik or enjoy a tasty spiced soup. This chain has five citywide locations including Ul. Gorokhovaya 17, Ligovsky pr. 111, Rubinsteyna 29 and at Bolshoy pr. 39 on Vasilevsky Island. No English menu.

Named after the Armenian region within Turkey, this Caucasian restaurant is popular among the Armenian diaspora in St. Petersburg. Comprising of six halls, Kilikia serves up all the Armenian favorites, including khourma, shashlik, and tava plates (a kind of stew). All are excellent, as is the servi [...]

What a shame - it could have been so easy but it all went wrong here. The staff were forgetful (to say the least) many of the dishes looked and tasted as though they had been prepared long in advance and someone was being more than generous with the oil. The Uzbek food on offer here isn't exactly t [...]

Cheery and friendly Georgian cafe He Goryui (Don't grieve) takes its name from the bittersweet 1969 Soviet comedy of the same name. Hidden away behind Nevsky, this place is a breath of fresh air;  great central location, two bright rooms, swift service and delicious plentiful menu. The treasures of Georgian cuisine and their homemade wine await! Khachipur of  more than eight varieties, creamy Georgian chicken in walnut sauce, scrumptious filling soups, as well as shashlik. Although its not on a main street being tucked away behind the unglamorours Sitny market, this upmarket Georgian restaurant  with reasonable prices is worth the journey.  Dining here is a pleasure with individual booths, tapestry covered settees, sheer netting upon which Georgian characters are printed, as well as waiters in traditional costume. Service is good, the dishes are exemplary and the English menu makes you want to eat everything. Fancy trying the khachipuri of mountain dwellers?
