The Brits love Indian curries and the yanks love Mexican food. In Russia (after Caucasian food) the most popular foreign cuisine is Japanese. In the last ten years the popularity of sushi has increased no end and sushi restaurants are now among the most popular eateries in the city. Russian sushi menus tend to favour rolls, although almost all menus offer a wide range of sashimi, soups, noodles and meat dishes too and the quality and value of the dishes are often a lot better than what you can find in Western Europe.

St. Petersburg | Restaurants and cafes | Japanese

This is a chain of superior Japanese restaurants in several locations around the city, with the same high service standard across the board. All their restaurants are more than comfortable, with traditional sushi rolls, soups and teas. We love the atlantic rolls (salmon, philadelphia and eel) and they also do a wonderful range of baked rolls - we recommend the crab rolls with hot shitake mushroom sauce. The toliets are still a bit of a mystery? Two toilets in one cubicle - what's that about? Also at ul. Italianskaya 6 and Vosstanya 15.

There are 180 dishes to choose from at this restaurant, which has a wide assortment of sushi, sashimi and yakitori and above-average service. The interior is trendy, and there are fashion shows on the many televisions. We recommend the fried noodles with pork and squid. If you want to try your hand at sushi-rolling at home, they have a separate make-your-own menu where you can pick up everything what you need (including, for those who need it, advice).

For a quick bite to eat or a more elaborate meal, this restaurant just off Nevsky prospekt is a great little escape. A small and humble restaurant serving a wide range of Japanese cuisine; whether a sushi lover or not, you will find something to satisfy your hunger. Decent prices, especially for the business lunch. Make sure to try the filling tomato soup and the smoked eel rolls. Hint: skip the uncomfortable benches and grab a table instead.  [...]

A warm and funky red and orange interior, Latin American tunes on the stereo and videos of the Rio carnival showing on a plasma screen complete the ‘samba’ theme at this up-beat restaurant. The menu has all the usual Philadelphia/California/tuna maki rolls, plus some special Latin-inspi [...]

With a view of Nevsky, and a striking rotating belt where Japanese dishes pass by like sail boats, it is worth a visit. A good business lunch here includes Miso soup with tofu and seaweed, six pieces of sushi, teriaki chicken with rice and salad and a drink - all for 290Rbl! [...]

This is no average sushi restaurant! Japanese art adorns the walls and Fashion TV plays above the sushi bar. The decor is elegant, the atmosphere is sophisticated and relaxed. The menu hosts a huge choice of hot and cold Japanese cuisine - prices are reasonable considering the great quality of the [...]

Sushi anti-sushi are the rules by which the fat yaposha mascot rules. In the first half of your menu you’ll find cheap rolls, soups, sashimi and teriyaki coated meat, while in the back of the menu comes the ‘anti-sushi’ options of Russian salads, borsch and pasta. The service here is speedier and friendlier than in the city’s other sushi chains and at such low prices the quality is very good. They have many locations including Italianskaya ul. 29 and Nevsky pr. 60, metro Gostiny dvor. No english menu.
