Traditional Russian cuisine is rich and hearty peasant fare. A lot of weight is given to winter-proof root vegetables, stewed meat and fatty dairy products. The dark green herb dill (ukrop) is sprinkled in abundance on many dishes. Classic dishes include Bliny (pancakes) served with ham (vechina), caviar (ikra), cheese (syr), or as a dessert with vareniye (chunky, sweet fruit preserve), or honey (myod) and tvorog (sweet cottage cheese). Expect to see a lot of soups on the menu too, such as Borshch (beetroot soup),  shchi (cabbage soup) or Ukha  (a clear fish soup). Salads are very popular here and always come with mayonaise. And of course not forgetting pelmeny (dumplings) a Russian dinner staple. Usually filled with meat and served with a dollop of smetana (sour cream).

In the Russian fairytale, the hero Emelya is the family fool who is granted everything he wishes by a pike. If we could meet that pike we’d wish to have never eaten here. The idea is that self-service Russian food in a room set up to look like a Russian country house is what tourists look for. Maybe they do, but no-one wants to eat food that is stomach-searingly evil. Maybe it was the goulash, the solyanka soup or the week-old bread that did it, but let’s just say, nothing went down well. If like Emelya you are a fool or you simply have a stomach of steel and no taste-buds, you could consider wasting your money here… Also at Nevsky pr. 64.

This simple restaurant has two rooms and a lovely terrace. It’s best to avoid the room on the left as it’s dedicated to very loud karaoke. The second room on the other hand is quiet and unassuming with simple furniture, a couple of booths and a giant map of St. Peterburg painted on the [...]

Restoran is a vast place that tries to combine rustic Russian style with a modern feel. This means pale, undecorated walls, two huge fireplaces and Russian linen on the tables. The menu is wonderful, everything is just like at grandmas, simple, filling and expertly executed - we've never had a bad dish here. The cold service and the sound of your own voice echoing off the walls however make you wish they'd let babushka have a go at cooking up some atmosphere too.

The Russian Goblet is a great little restaurant that has risen like a phoenix from the flames of the former posh Thai restaurant that once occupied the same premises. The strange layout of the interior reminds you vaguely of how it once was, only now samovars and stuffed bears have replaced the dragons and mist-shrouded hills. This is classic Russian peasant fare, stodgy pies, meat patties, big blin smothered in Smetana (sour cream) and huge hearty soups at ‘democratic’ (Russian-speak for affordable) prices. If you are lucky your friendly country bumpkin looking waitress may even offer you a shot of their homemade horseradish vodka - certainly one of the more unusual things you can drink in Russia.

Russkaya Ryumochnaya No.1
Typically a ryumochnaya is a stand up, spit and sawdust kind of a place where working men wash down cheap vodka with salty snacks. This sophisticated fin de siècle inspired place is as far away from that kind of place as you can imagine. This is Russian food fit for tsars, complete with black caviar and reindeer meat. The historic dishes are rich and well made, making this a very classy introduction to Russian cuisine. They also have possibly the biggest vodka list we’ve ever seen, as well as a vodka museum!

It’s been said that this cosy little pancake cafe has the best bliny in town. At lunchtime it’s usually packed and the queues can be a headache; at quieter times it’s a good place for a quick, cheap bite and a cup of tea. Samovar has great traditional Russian salads, and everythin [...]

Head upstairs and worship at the throne of  Teremok - the pancake or blini kings. Although it is strictly fast food, the blini are assembled as you order them and there is a wide variety including the Ilya Murometz, a popular concoction of boiled pork, mushrooms and cheese. They also do different porridge dishes, an awesome fish soup (ukha) and have beer on tap. There are also many takeaway Teremok stands dotted around the city.

Marvellous and packed with high-kicking, high-energy energetic Russians doing their thing in traditional style. The food matches the atmosphere perfectly with Russian cuisine all the way with some great service as well. The blini (pancakes) are magic. Tsar
Tsar, as its name suggests sets out to make its guests feel like real Russian royalty. Drinks are served in fine crystal glasses, old portraits of noblemen cover the walls and even the toilets are encased inside giant leather-lined thrones. The Russian cuisine on offer is first rate – no doubt Nicholas II himself would have loved the Pozharskaya cutlet a la Pushkin. The staff, food and atmosphere here is a real lesson in imperial elegance.
