Mops

Mops
The first Thai restaurant in St Petersburg and the interior at least is truly exquisite. The Thai décor offers a combination of hectic and clean lines; tigers hold light fittings in their mouths; giant roses adorn the ceiling and colorful miniature elephants stand in neat rows. The menu focuses on dumplings, salads, spring rolls and soups to start and noodles and rice, wok and curry for mains. Unfortunately, portions are small, service is variable and they've adjusted the spice to Russian tastes so best to ask for extra heat (ochin ostry).

This used to be a fantastic menu. For some reason they took away favourites like the chicken Satays and tried to move the menu more up market. This misses the point because the fantastic thing about Thai food is the simplicity of it and the mix of flavours and spices. It is still ok but I find the dishes complicated in taste and it does not reach the standards that is did previously as in the past it was the best Thai food I have had in Russia and as good as anywhere else in the world I have eaten. Restaurant decor is great and worth a visit just for that.

I lived in the same neighborhood as the restaurant, was one of their earliest customers (back when they only had five menu's and I had to wait until other clients had chosen their dinners). Mops is a wonderful place and a very welcome change from the sushi that dominates Asian cuisine in Russia. Dishes are not typically spicy, but they are imaginative and very well prepared. GET THIS: You can substitute chicken for beef (or whatever) in the curries. The waitresses do not take offense if you ask as much, and the chef quickly obliges. Such willingness to oblige is still not common in Russia. The menu offers a wide and interesting selection of everything from appetizers to even a small dessert menu. The service is excellent, and they remember you if you are a regular customer. I was a regular enough customer that the waiters always recognized me and provided excellent service. They all spoke excellent English and were key in making the evening enjoyable. And yes, the bathrooms are straight out of some spotless, ritzy hotel. If you eat at Mops, a trip to the bathroom is a must. The little bar out by the bathrooms is a cool little niche, but it looks to be dominated by "hip" regulars. But in general, a trip to Mops is a must if you are in STP. The owner has definitely made every effort to create a unique dining experience and the chef and waiter/waitress staff do their utmost to make the evening both tasty and pleasurable. Very highly recommended.

Having lived in Thailand for 5 years i can truely say that the Chef at Mops does a very nice job of producing authentic thai cuisine. Service is fine, and the restaurant is quite fun. Young crowd, good bar, and great place to check out when in st petersburg.
