Borey
Tucked away below street level, this charming gallery displays influential and exciting work. Heavily featured are the works of avant-garde and academic artists. This is not just ‘pretty art’: it is resoundingly ‘clever art’. It thus has a deservedly high reputation in the c [...]

Di-Di
The gallery is a well-lit, bright and cheerful respite from the greyness of its outside surroundings. More akin to a wealthy grandmother’s house than a traditional gallery, Di-Di contains an assorted spectrum of modern art, displayed in interconnecting rooms, corridors and staircases.

The gallery makes a worthwhile visit whether the intention is buying art, or merely investigating what the Russian contemporary art scene has to offer. Whilst some of the work is distinctly ‘buyable’ and would happily hang on a family home’s living room wall, other pieces are more inventive and wild. Displayed on cabinets and amongst antique furniture, there are also some interesting sculptures and some small installations.  [...]

Marina Gisich Gallery
Devoted to fulfilling the St. Petersburg arty crowd’s budding hunger, the gallery hosts a vast array of conceptual art. Its quick turn-over (exhibitions change usually every two months) makes the gallery particularly eclectic. The vibrant exhibitions, some individual and some collaborative, reflect the modern experiments with printing, mixed media and photography.

The gallery hall itself is roomy and airy and uses its space well. It is not over-filled with works, allowing one to spend sufficient time enjoying each one. Although the gallery exhibits predominantly local artists, it welcomes and encourages artists with varied influences. Although the Gallery usually maintains regular working hours, they ask that visits are made only by prior appointment. [...]

Tucked away off the street, the National Centre of Photography is an unexpected treat.
