"But the Muses were not silent"
Three floors of this school building hold an outstanding collection, loving complied by enthusiastic locals, of artefacts relating to art and culture during the siege of Leningrad. As the title of the museum implies, despite the death and destruction in the city at that time, art, music, theatre and poetry continued to flourish. One room is devoted to Shostakovich’s famous Leningrad symphony with original manuscripts, photos and instruments on display. The other rooms are devoted to ballet and theatre, poetry and fine arts and feature original paintings, posters, photos and theatre costumes. The last room is dedicated to children who lived through the siege and has a touching collection of toys, sketches and clothing.

This beautiful and dramatic panorama was designed by artists who had fought in WW2, many of them participated in the Defence of Leningrad. Twelve large brass reliefs, showing scenes from life during the blockade, cover the entrance to the hall, while the granite walls bear the names of war heroes. In front of the museum's entrance there is an open-air exhibition of Soviet tanks that took part in fighting on the Nevsky Bridgehead and in the Siege Breakthough operation.

The Soviets designed this monument in memory of victims of World War 2. When the temperatures drop to unbearable levels, the flame is a welcome distraction from the cold for all those wandering through Mar’s Field. The spot is frequented by couples who are about to marry. [...]

Monument of the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad
The 40m high needle and memorial statues are the first sight anyone sees as they travel toward the city from Pulkovo airport. The Blockade Museum, with its imposing mosaic walls is located underneath the square. Exhibits include handwritten letters written by boys requesting permission to fight on the front and film footage of the Siege. A big copper diary turns describing what happens during that day during the Siege. [...]

This building bears a blue and white stencilled warning which reads: ‘Citizens: during artillery bombing this side of the street is most dangerous.’ There are similar plaques around the city, like one on the Anichkov Bridge which says that this missing piece of granite is one of many  scars left behind from shelling that took place during Siege of Leningrad.

Piskaryevskoye Memorial Cemetery
More than a million people died in the Leningrad blockade, and 489,000 of them are buried in this memorial cemetery. As you walk toward the monument of Mother Russia, with mass graves on either side of the path, you will hear Shostakovich's 7th Symphony (Leningrad Symphony), which he composed during the war. Situated in a beautiful neoclassical building, this was the first private-owned museum in Russia. The exhibition on ‘Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War’ gives a moving impression of the heroic struggle of the people of St. Petersburg during the Siege. On display is the original copy of the harrowing siege diary of 11 year old Tanya Savicheva. There’s also a small exhibition dedicated to the history and owners of the palace. Refurbished for the 200th anniversary of the city, several rooms  illustrate the building’s former glory complete with memorabilia from former owners. Other exhibitions deal with life and work in St. Petersburg during the 1930s, supported by tons of original pictures, clothes, magazines and other odds and ends. Some information in English. [...]
