Blockade Museum (State Museum of the Defense and Blockade of Leningrad)

Blockade Museum (State Museum of the Defense and Blockade of Leningrad)
Dedicated to the Defence of Leningrad during the Second World War, or as the Russians call it, the Great Patriotic War, this museum is sombre yet absorbing. Full of displays showing the  famine ravaged city (in November 1941, the bread ration was just 250gms a day for workers) and the heroic efforts to somehow get food in from beyond the blockade across the frozen Lake Ladoga, the famous 'Road of Life' are depicted here. Despite the mighty lack of English, visitors can still follow most of what is being depicted. Pick up a booklet on the history of the Museum for 10Rbl at the front desk.

Admission 100-200Rbl. Guided tours only in Russian, 250Rbl per person. Closed every last thursday of the month.

A Must see for WW II interests ! while in ST PETE ! for My Russian wife and I in Oct 2009 visited this excellent WW II related site I have always had a great interest in WW II on the eastern front the German and Russian side of the war. I understand that this museum is not a large as the first one built after the war ? it was destoryed by Stalin ? sad ! a very strange man ! a spent much time looking and the many items and taking photos a great collection of German & Russian & FINNS weapons uniforms flags helmets photos a excellent collection of items used by the FINNS ! my wife translated Russian to English for me what the information talked about some is in English one staff memeber that I talked to do use English perfect. The parts displays of the museum that talked about how the civilians lived during this period was excellent a excellent display of German and Russian tanks are just as you come into the main floor of the first floor what a great place to have a chance to visit and I will go back again soon I was told that the museum is being up dated all the time and some students where working on displays on the first floor. I now see on the internet in 2011 is more information telling travelers about the WW II museum in ST PETE in 2009 there was not much available on the internet ? only in small travel guides and my wife knew of this WW II museum and her family that lives in the area of course she knows my interests ! it also has been great being able to talk to Russian WW II vets during my travels to all over Russia ! Thank you ! a excllent WW II museum ! I will be back ASAP ! maybe 2011 ? visit to family in ST PETE.
