Troitsky archaeological dig

  Troitskaya ul. 2      (+7) 8162 77 37 70     more than a year ago
There are dozens of small archaeological digs in Novgorod but the Troitsky dig is the only one which is open for visitors. As they admit themselves ‘it’s not Pompeii…’ so anyone hoping to see huge walls being excavated from the ancient old town will be disappointed. Instead it’s a large trench with workers crawling all over it in search of evidence of the city’s old wooden roads and famous pottery.

The local Agricultural Technical College organises digs . . . but for WW2 relics. The local hero is Lenya Golikov, one of the schoolboy partisans who lived in the woods during the German occupation. His statue is in the square opposite the Volkhov hotel. The Tech College has a museum dedicated to the partisans. It's not an official tourist thing, but asking nicely seemed to work.
