Political framework

Serbia is a parliamentary republic. The Serbian Parliament has 250 seats. The MPs are elected for a term of 4 years, the President is elected to serve a 5-year term. The most recent parliamentary elections were held in May 2008 and the presidential elections in January 2008. The current President is Boris Tadić of the Democratic Party, and the Prime Minister is Mirko Cvetković. Democratic Party, together with G17 Plus and Socialist Party of Serbia (deceased Slobodan Milošević’s party) form the ruling government coalition. The major opposition parties are the Serbian Progressive Party (the single strongest party in Serbia), Democratic Party of Serbia and Liberal Democratic Party.
