Djavolja varos

more than a year ago
The harsh and mysterious atmosphere of Djavolja Varos, Devil's town, can be attributed to the rare natural phenomena here. Firstly, 202 eerie stone formations created by erosion, between two and 15metres in height and less than 1m in diameter, topped by stone blocks weighing as much as 100kg, have been here for centuries yet appear almost unreal. Secondly, two springs of extremely acidic water (pH 1.5) with high mineral content (15 g/l; even 1000 times higher than in ordinary drinking waters) make Djavolja Varos a true wonder of nature. While being more than slightly spooky, in another way it's picturesque and timid, just like the remains of an old town, church, cemetery and several interesting mines.

Official nominee of Serbia in the "New 7 Wonders of Nature" campaign, Djavolja Varos has been placed in the list of the Top 77.
