Located a little northwest of the centre of the country, Šiauliai is agreeably situated for getting there by all forms of transport with the exception of by air. On the main Vilnius-Klaipėda railway line, the city can be reached from Vilnius in less than three hours and from Klaipėda in about two. Buses run directly from all major towns and cities in the country as well as stopping off in the city en route to other destinations. Šiauliai is at the crossroads of two major road routes, the east-west route connecting with several Lithuanian towns and the north-south highway running directly from Riga. Once you’ve actually arrived, getting around is fairly straightforward as most places of interest are within walking distance of each other. Public transport is efficient, plus taxis are relatively cheap to use.
