Planica 2010

March 18 - 21 2010 is to be the 77th ski flying championship at Planica. After meticulous, year long preparations, the village of Rateče is finally ready once again for the onslaught of 50'000 people. Being amongst dramatic 2000m+ alpine peaks, Planica is the only kind of setting worthy of such an internationally prestigious ski event. As such, records have been made and broken here since since all the way back in 1934.

Home to the annual FIS Ski Flying World Cup event, the backdrop of the Ponce Valley at Planica is magnificent. Awesome rugged peaks tower all around; formed by the Planica glacier some 20,000 years ago. The jump itself comprises a fearsomely large and heart stopping (-ly) steep slope, stuff only for professional ski fliers, or the clinically insane. The current world record (239m) is held by one of the former, Norwegian Bjørn Einar Romøren, and was contested by a Finn, Janne Ahonen, whose 240m flight ended with a fall. 2005 was apparently a great year for not only breaking records here. Planica 2010 promises to be as good as ever, not least for those privileged enough to be here, observing this amazing spectacle and indeed international sport.
