Wintertime in Ljubljana!

While it's been an exceptionally terrible winter so far for both skiers and global warming deniers, we'd be lying if we said we haven't enjoyed the virtually non-stop sunny weather and unseasonably high temperatures. That said, as we went to print meteorologists had been forecasting the imminent arrival of heavy snowfall for some two to three weeks straight, and they can't be wrong forever (or at least we still naively give them the benefit of the doubt). In fact, we've already gone ahead and conducted a poll of the country's best ski resorts (and spas), just in case the snow does finally arrive.

Of course this winter's bizarre happenings are not confined only to the weather. After early elections in December, Slovene politicians are doing their best impression of their Belgian counterparts, and the country is currently poised to head into its third month without a government. Not that this is of any consequence to tourists and other short-term visitors (or most others for that matter), as there is still plenty to see, do and experience over the coming months.

The end of January brings the annual Alpe-Adria: Tourism and Leisure Show - the largest event of its kind in the region - while the 8th of February marks Slovenia's national day of culture, with most museums, galleries and other cultural institutions offering free admission. Then two weeks later it's already carnival season, with various parades, events and parties taking place throughout the city - if you're interested in the latter, you'll likely want to check out the results of our Best Ljubljana Nightlife poll. There are also several must-see exhibitions at the city's arts spaces (including one at the newly opened Museum of Contemporary Art), weekly English language standup comedy at Hotel Union, and the two largest ski (and sports in general) events of the year in March: Pokal Vitranc and Planica. See our Culture & Events page for more info on these events and many more.

If you plan to make any purchases while you're in town, you can find some of Ljubljana's top shops, both large and small, on our Shopping page, or pick up a copy of our 68-page dedicated Ljubljana Shopping guide for even more tips, suggestions and info.

If your travels bring you anywhere else in our pint-sized but geographically and culturally diverse country, In Your Pocket has the whole of Slovenia covered, from fairytale Bled in the north to second city Maribor in the east to picturesque Piran and the rest of country’s Mediterranean coast in the west. We are also extremely proud to introduce our newest Slovenian In Your Pocket guide: Posavje - a region in the country's southeast corner that may not be on the radar of many tourists, but is packed with sights and activities, and makes for a great day-trip or weekend away from the capital

As always, we welcome any and all feedback, be it on Facebook
FoursquareTwitter or even old-fashioned email. If you have any questions about Ljubljana (or Slovenia) that you can’t find the answer to here, there’s no better place to ask than on our 6,000 strong Ljubljana In Your Pocket page on Facebook - you’re guaranteed to get an almost instant response from one of our writers, a knowledgeable local or seasoned traveller familiar with the city.
