Tolmin

Tolmin
The most famous time of year in Tolmin is festival season, when for two weeks in July the city, actually more like a town or village, is given up to thousands of revellers. Metalkamp and the Riversplash Reggae Festival are held on the banks of the magnificent turquoise Soča, a true (hedonistic) paradise at that time of year. However, they are by no means the only reason people come to Tolmin, the cultural and administrative centre of the region. Lying in the awesome Soča Valley, it is a great place to start your sports/adventure holiday as everything from rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and paragliding is all within easy reach. Tolmin is also culturally rich. Every September the annual 'Krajevna Skupnost Tolmin' (local community) festival sees teams compete to lovingly prepare the best 'Frika', a traditional dish of potatoes and locally-made cheese - not to mention drink copious amounts of delicious home-made wine and schnapps! The region is also historically significant. In the first world war 12 battles between Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers took place along the River Soča. The 'Isonzo Front' (as it was called in Italian), was the setting for Hemingway's account of being a Red Cross volunteer in A Farewell to Arms. These days the Kobarid museum (18km away) remembers the fighting that took place here between 1915-1917, receiving European museum of the year honours in 1993.
